About this condition
Friedreich's ataxia is a rare inherited disease that affects the nervous system and muscles. It causes progressive difficulty with coordination and balance (ataxia), leading to problems with walking, speech, and hand movements. Over time, it can also affect the heart and spine. Symptoms usually begin in childhood or adolescence. While there is no cure yet, treatments like physical therapy, medications, and heart care can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
